Using X and Y for axis sensitivity and then vertical for inversion feels a bit messy. Lastly, there should be consistency in the wording. Also, these settings make more sense, at least to me, in the Controls tab. All caps, very angular… I have no cognitive issues and yet the word eluded me for a few moments. For starters the text on the top of the menu says AIMING but these settings are not limited to that. There are a couple of things to mention here. There is also a Reset Gameplay Options with a clickable button to bring all previous options to their original values. As the name implies it inverts the vertical movement of our mouse. Last but not least we have Invert Cam Vertical Axis with a checkmark that acts as on/off. These particular settings are more important as we will see later. Then we have similar sliders for Look Sensitivity, to control the camera movement. These control the mouse sensitivity when aiming to score a goal. In regards to what I can say with certainty we have separate sliders for Throw Sensitivity of X and Y axis, or if you want to simplify horizontal and vertical. I can’t tell if there are the same for the gamepad as my controller is broken at the moment. In Gameplay, we have a mix of options all related to controls sensitivity for the mouse in my case. I have to say the menus are simple but functional and not having to press any specific key to go back, apply and such gives a good first impression. All menus and settings can be fully navigated using the mouse or gamepad. When we enter the Options menu we find four tabs. The game is still in Alpha phase but we played it on PC to see how it performs in terms of accessibility. All this takes place in an oval arena surrounded by fans that cheer with excitement after every pass, tackle and team play. Two teams of three players run, or roll, since they use roller skates, to get possession of the ball, do a full lap to unlock the goal and score by throwing the ball in. I think that by the end of the year, Roller Champions will be in a strong place that will set it up for long term success.Roller Champions is a team-based game of the sports genre. Roller Champions needs a few more permanent game modes to keep people interested, and would benefit from having some sort of event going on all the time. The core concept is a winner, and there is plenty of room for expansion. Roller Champions is off to a strong start, and seems to be headed in the right direction. However, the developers have confirmed that it will be coming soon, which will greatly benefit the games broad base appeal. This definitely seems like a feature that should have been included for launch (or certainly by season 1). As a result, for now you have to play on the same console to play with your friends. Additionally, while cross-play is in the game, you strangely cannot make a cross-platform party. My understanding is that most of these issues have now been resolved and people are having a far smoother experience. I personally ran into very few glitches in my time with Roller Champions. The opening of the game had its struggles many reported issues getting into matches and issues gaining “fans” or XP from those matches. That being said, I suspect those will be added as the game further develops. I really think 2 v 2 should be a core game mode. In the kickoff season, there were 2 limited time modes, one called hot potato (where you had to pass in a certain amount of time or the ball blew up), and another that was a 2v2 mode on a shorter rink. Each week, there are 3 in-match challenges to complete, and on weekends there are events. The “Roller Pass” was half the length of a normal season’s pass, and included some pretty neat cosmetics. The kickoff season was a sort of soft launch for the game. From there, you will learn various strategies and combine moves to really begin to become skilled at the game. Once this happens a few (probably dozen) times, you start to realize how important building momentum and speed is to success in the game. That is, until the first time someone uppercuts on a wall, and comes blistering down to crush you with a tackle. You will feel like you’re on top of the world. When you first start playing, you will find yourself skating straight-line laps around the arena. In order to succeed, you have to play as a team, and use various moves from the meta of the game to dodge opponents and pass at the right moment.Įasy to learn, hard to master is definitely a statement that applies to Roller Champions. If your team turns the ball over at any time, you lose your progress and have to start over. One lap gets you the ability to score 1 point, 2 laps = 3 points, and 3 laps = 5 points. The goal is for you to skate laps around the rink through gates, which opens the goal. The best way I can describe the core gameplay of Roller Champions is that it is a 3v3 mix of Roller Derby and Basketball.
